Archaeologists have found 24 guns so far at the wreck site at Beaufort Inlet, North Carolina, shown in this site plan, adding weight to the notion that the vessel was a pirate ship, since merchant vessels were not as heavily armed. For scale, the silhouette below shows a typical early 18th-century French three-masted vessel. The cannon, anchor, and other artifacts labeled on the image are shown in their exact position on the ocean floor.
