'oahi, the practice of throwing lit firebrands like giant bottle rockets into the sea. Samson Mahuiki, 71, who lives below the peak, remembers his father and uncle being the last men to throw the firebrands off Makana when he was a boy. The razor-thin ridge was so narrow, he says, the men had to straddle it to get across, carrying bundles of hollow sticks nearly ten feet long. When asked if any young Hawaiians have taken up the challenge, Mahuiki laughs and shakes his head. "No, that breed is long gone."]]>
