National Geographic magazine took home three National Magazine Awards last night—more than any other publication, and the most NGM has ever won in a single year. NGM was awarded the top honor, general excellence in a publication with over two million circulation—as well as the awards for reporting and photojournalism.

The "Ellie" awards for 2007, presented during a ceremony at New York City's Jazz at Lincoln Center on May 1, are the industry's most prestigious honor. NGM's three awards name Editor in Chief Chris Johns. The general excellence award is for NGM's June, August, and December issues.

The photojournalism award, which honors John Stanmeyer's photographs in "Bedlam in the Blood: Malaria," also names Director of Photography David Griffin, Deputy Director of Photography Susan A. Smith, Design Director David C. Whitmore, and Senior Photo Editor Sarah Leen. The article ran in the July issue.

The reporting award names writer Peter Hessler in addition to Chris Johns, and recognizes Hessler's work on "China's Instant Cities" in the June issue.
