Bioko’s Island Ark

Four National Geographic photographers spent two weeks in Equatorial Guinea on a Rapid Assessment Visual Expedition (RAVE), capturing the rich—and often endangered—biodiversity of Bioko Island.

Photographer Christian Ziegler trekked to the interior of the island, setting up camera traps and making images of everything from monkeys to caterpillars.

A caterpillar covered with empty pupal cases of parasitoid wasps has so far survived. The wasp larvae live inside the caterpillar and feed off it, then pupate on its exterior, finally hatching from their pupal cases.
