The Secret Service took the job of protecting the President in response to an informal request by Congress following William McKinley's assassination in 1901.
Theodore Roosevelt was the first President under full-time protection by the Secret Service.
There have been seven unsuccessful assassination attempts on Presidents and Presidents-elect, including two on Gerald Ford.
