At a traditional Christmas festival known as Las Parrandas de Remedios, held on December 24 in the town of Remedios near Cuba’s northern coast, two neighborhoods compete to see who makes the loudest explosions. “It lasts about eight hours,” Pellegrin says. “At the end people are quite stunned.”
