Journalist Todd Carrel reported from Asia for more than a decade as the ABC News bureau chief and correspondent in Beijing and as an Associated Press reporter in Japan. Before that he worked as a freelance writer and independent documentary producer in San Francisco.

Since he was beaten by Chinese police in 1992 while covering a protest in Tiananmen Square for ABC News, he has been undergoing treatment for head, neck, and back injuries. During his rehabilitation, he has been a journalist-in-residence at the East-West Center in Honolulu, a Knight International Press Fellow in Hong Kong, and a visiting lecturer at the University of California’s Graduate School of Journalism at Berkeley.
