I came across this scene at dusk in the river town of Rurrenabaque, our gateway to Madidi. Though it looked pretty at first, I was amazed when I realized that these young men were relaxing not on a beach but on a mountain of reddish sawdust dumped by a local lumber mill.

Many of the mills in Rurrenabaque dump their debris along the banks of the Río Beni, which rises and washes the waste away. Much of the wood processed here is illegally harvested from the park.
