The macaws that would periodically fly over the park were a real highlight of the trip but also a tremendous technical challenge to photograph. The only way to capture them well was to be above them. The only way to do that was to work on scaffolding towers or the edges of cliffs where my guides had seen them. I spent a full two weeks waiting to see just a few bursts of color out over the green canopy.

Here, a mated pair of red-and-green macaws follows their single offspring to a feeding area across the valley of the Río Tuichi.
