“Peter first discovered his hands and began talking to them at about ten weeks,” wrote Maura Winkler in our author’s baby book. He hasn’t shut up since.

While a history student at Georgetown University in Washington D.C., Winkler spent the 1983-84 academic year in England. He started at the National Geographic Society in 1987 and has written Web features, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC map supplements, kids’ articles for WORLD magazine, TV scripts, educational materials, and more. A veteran, he also writes the monthly OnLine page for NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC magazine.

Winkler’s 12-volume, free verse autobiography, Batteries Not Included, is reportedly a best-seller in a parallel universe.
