Portrait of hardship and heartbreak, 55-year-old Chanda raised six girls alone after her husband’s early death. Her sorrow deepened recently when illness claimed the life of her daughter Kurowa. Yet her adornments defy despair: The vivid hibiscus and 20-rupee note in her ears imply beauty and wealth; a red flash at her hairline recalls her past marriage.
