Flashback CELEBRATING THE NEW MOON

Body-bashing in total darkness, young, athletic Japanese men fight to retrieve camphor-scented batons during the Hadaka Matsuri ceremony for the Lunar New Year. This photograph was taken shortly after World War II at Saidaiji Temple in Okayama, Japan.
The photographers camera flashbulb provided the rooms only illumination.
