Town Meeting in Makao
Photograph by Nick Nichols

At a town meeting in Makao, Congo, Fay explained his mission to chronicle the forest and solicited the help of Pygmy guides. The town elders, in their turn, demanded that a long-requested medical clinic be built. The promise was made and volunteers signed on for the expedition.

SPECIAL EQUIPMENT OR COMMENTS:

The woman pointing at Mike Fay eventually turned to me and said, "Why is this stranger here taking pictures?" Shooting black and white in an unobtrusive documentary style required the quiet invisible feel that the small "primitive" Leica allows the photographer.
