Bare essentials suffice in the field, where expedition members bake themselves in a ramshackle banya, or sauna, then eat freshly shot duck roasted over an open fire. Such basic living is a refreshing reprieve from urban life in Moscow. “It’s a charge of happiness,” says one team member. “After some time here, you feel clean for a while.”
