The Road No Longer Taken
Photograph by Randy Olson

A weathered boardwalk over swampy ground points toward a lake draped at the base of larch-covered hills. Silence is palpable on this roadless plateau, a vast lava field laid by volcanic eruptions some 250 million years ago. Essentially uninhabited and unexplored, this Nevada-size region remains largely untouched by the pollution that taints much of the Russian Arctic.
