Workhorse of the Soviet era, an aging MI-8 helicopter ferries explorers and supplies to a Putorana camp. Decidedly low-tech gear included iron woodstoves, axes, canvas tents, crates of potatoes, and oven mitts full of nails. “This was really heavy stuff,” says photographer Randy Olson. “To see if we were overweight, the pilot would just hover for a while. If we could stay aloft, he’d clear us to fly.”
