Poison Clouds!
Photograph by Carsten Peter

Noxious compounds billowing from the depths of the Marum crater put expedition member Chris Heinlein’s gas mask to the test. “At times the gases were so strong the filters let some through,” he says. “When I saw those clouds moving in, it was hard to keep cool.”

Camera: Nikon F5
Film Type: Kodak 100VS
Lens: 20-35mm f/2.8
Speed and F-Stop: 1/30 @ f/5.6
Weather Conditions: Area covered with acid gases
Time of Day: morning
Lighting Techniques: None

SPECIAL EQUIPMENT OR COMMENTS:
The acid gases were attacking the camera lens and coating the camera. The surface of the lens was destroyed, creating poor optics.
