Preparing for the journey home, Jemez archaeologist and tribal preservation
officer William Whatley and War Chief Pete Toya inspect the loading of the
transport truck in Massachusetts. Toya presided over the reburial ceremony;
Whatley was instrumental in documenting the Indians’ claim to the remains.
The repatriation and reburial followed years of legal and historical
research and negotiations with museum officials.
