Armed against bandits, expedition guards warm themselves around a fire. Until recently bands of robbers roamed the highlands along the river, raining down rocks and sometimes gunshots on travelers below. But government militias have reduced banditry. During the six-week journey the guards encountered only a nighttime donkey thief.
