Burning Ambition
Photograph by Cary Wolinsky

Astride a 3,000-pound (1,360-kilogram) buffalo named Harvey Wallbanger, Jr., T. C. Thorstenson rides through a ring of fire. He made this same ride every afternoon for 45 days while performing at the Quartzsite rodeo grounds. Though he offered half off the advertised admission price of ten dollars and “your money back if you don’t like the show,” attendance was only fair. “This is a tough crowd,” he says.

T. C. moved the show—Champions of the West—to a permanent location in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he is doing well.

I followed T. C. through a workday to get a feel for his routine. The second time around I was able to get some good photographs of the ring of fire.
