Coming Out of the Shadows
Photograph by Chris Johns

A boy confronts his shadow in a squatter camp bordering the Kalahari Desert. Romanticized as nomadic hunter-gatherers who were uniquely close to nature, most of southern Africa’s indigenous Bushmen now live in settlements on land not their own. A few have won more. South Africa recently gave this boy’s clan 140 square miles [225 square kilometers] and a share in managing a game park.
