Man was not just man when he entered the spirit world. In their trance dances Bushman artist shamans would transform into composite beings—in this case a human figure with pointed ears and antelope-like eyes and markings—as they harnessed animals’ spiritual power. After returning from the spirit world, they captured their experiences in paint.
