Ladies Night Out

Ready to get wet, women members of the Waimanalo Canoe Club push a 40-foot [12-meter] outrigger canoe off the beach to start evening practice. Owning only five fiberglass canoes, the club alternates practice times for its mens and womens crews. For the weekend races the club switches from the fiberglass canoes to a traditional canoe made from koa wood. For the paddlers the koa canoe contains the spiritual essence of the tree from which it was carved.
