Girls who practice together shower together at Kaiona Beach Park. The canoe club’s membership has quadrupled recently to more than a hundred paddlers, from preteens to fifty-somethings. Head coach Tammy Kaneaiakala explains the attraction: “Paddling is the one sport here where the entire family can spend time together in one place. People feel better about themselves—and men are losing their beer bellies.”
