Bartram’s first big break came in 1768 when a wealthy natural history enthusiast in London commissioned drawings of all America’s “land tortoises.” It was a creature Bartram already knew well: About a decade earlier he titled this work “The great Mud Tortoise from Pennsylvania—called the snaping Turtle.”
