No place so enchanted Bartram as the “great Alachua Savanna,” a grassy wetland basin near today’s Gainesville, Florida. Bartram’s panoramic view includes “sprightly deer,” “the beautiful fleet Siminole horse,” and “the sonorous watchful crane.”
