“Whale steak” is one of two minke whale entrées on the menu at Moon Garden, a Tokyo restaurant. Despite a 1986 international whaling moratorium the Japanese continue to hunt minkes in the Antarctic and North Pacific under a provision that allows for “scientific whaling.” Researchers study select organs; the rest of the animal is sold for human consumption.
