Prime Property
Photograph by David Alan Harvey

It’s a straight shot south along Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard from Harlem to the tonier neighborhoods around Central Park and the Manhattan skyline beyond. Driven by lower Manhattan’s astronomical real estate prices (and reassured by a drop in crime), the middle class has rediscovered central Harlem. Housing prices have shot up, although the neighborhood still lacks amenities such as hotels. One of its most famous, the Hotel Theresa (white building, foreground), closed decades ago. Since then the owners have leased the building for offices and stores.
