Bargain Basement
Photograph by David Alan Harvey

Martin Luther King, Jr., watches over the sales floor of a discount clothing store. Harlem residents once had to travel miles to shop, but national chains are opening stores along 125th Street to profit from an untapped market. Professionals moving into the area have raised the average household income to $45,000.

Camera: Leica M6
Film Type: Fujichrome Velvia 50
Lens: 35mm f/1.2
Speed and F-Stop: 1/15 @ f/1.2
Weather Conditions: Indoors
Time of Day: Afternoon
Lighting Techniques: Small flash bounced off ceiling

Special Equipment or Comments:
This picture is a mixture of available light and flash. I used a slow shutter speed to pick up the ambient light in the background and to help cancel out the “green” light from the overhead fluorescent lights in the store. The flash is “warmer” than the green ambient light making the lighting appear “normal.”
