On the Town
Photograph by David Alan Harvey

Patrons of the Apollo Theater’s “Amateur Night” drop in at the Lenox Lounge. In the 1920s Harlem glittered as a popular nightspot. Wealthy whites came during Prohibition for plentiful whiskey and hot performers like jazz great Jelly Roll Morton. After decades of decay Harlem now welcomes well-heeled African Americans and a new generation of trendy clubs.
