Sheltered from the press of the crowd, a young woman minds a baby and a table spread with four-cent piles of onions. Djénnés weekly market fills the plaza in front of the Great Mosque and spills into the citys main square, attracting thousands of buyers and sellers from nearby villages. Five hundred years ago Djénnés proximity to the Bani River, a tributary of the Niger, between the Sahara desert and the coastal forest, made the city an even bigger center of trade. Arabs came to exchange salt from the desert for gold and ivory from the forest. Wrote a 17th-century Arab historian: It is because of this blessed town that caravans come to Timbuktu from all points of the horizon.
