Sheer Stamina

Prompted by the visit of a trader who will buy their wool, Tibetan herders in Qinghai Province shear their sheep. Living for most of the year in yakhair tents, they move every few months with their flocks to find new pasture. China wants to settle such people and make them part of the national mainstream. Though the prospect of getting modern homes, medical care, and formal education is attractive, many nomads are reluctant to give up their traditional livelihoodand their cultural identity. |
