Seeking Blessings

Seeking Blessings
Photograph by Mark W. Moffett

Visitors spin a prayer wheel in hopes of good fortune at a temple in Yunnan Province, China, dedicated to preserving the environment. Writing above the mural lauds Mount Kawagebo as the “glorious product of nature” and a “treasure land of biodiversity”. “If the natural balance is destroyed,” it warns, “humans will be punished by nature.” The region’s Buddhists have long held the mountains of south–central China in sacred regard, helping protect the region’s unique array of plants and animals.
