For waitresses Mandi Davis, Leah Brooks, and “Dell” Pfeffer, left to right, something’s always cooking at the Fort Randall Bait & Tackle café—even without customers. Mandi works the breakfast shift starting at 6:30 a.m. “It’s not rowdy,” she says. “Retirees come in for coffee. Then you have the hunters and fishers. A couple tourists. And of course the local people.” Asked about what there is to do in this town of 168 people, Mandi says, “There’s not much here.” Pause. “There’s nothing here.” That suits some of the regulars just fine. |
