Holding court with a student in his lab at the University of Agricultural Sciences in Bangalore, India, Gowda Ramanjini examines a muskmelon that has been genetically modified to contain a rabies vaccine. Rabies kills thousands of people every year in India and infects countless dogs. The modified muskmelon could provide a cheap and easy way to immunize millions of people, and a powder derived from the muskmelon could be added to dog food. The fruit has successfully prevented rabies in mice; dog tests are on the way.
