In Kenya, disease-resistant sweet potatoes grown from tissue culture have revolutionized life for Beatrice Kirundu, enabling her family not just to eat better but also to sell enough of its crop to pay for school fees and other expenses. Biotech advocates say that genetically engineered foods, among them sweet potatoes, could transform agriculture for millions of subsistence farmers across the developing world.
