Catfish Zoom 3

Poisoning the Water
Photograph by Randy Olson

Sean Williams, an Amerindian, crushes the roots of a hiari plant, then stirs them in the water to flush out the fish. The roots’ toxic juices impairs a fish’s gills, forcing it to swim closer to the surface where there’s more oxygen—and where the fisherman eagerly awaits.
