Field Notes From Photographer Nina Berman
Best Worst Quirkiest

After maybe four or five days, I finally found an apartment I had been looking for near the Armitage platform. The view from the child's bedroom window of the train barreling into the station was supposed to be killer. So when I finally got there, I was thrilled to see it was just that.

Dealing with the heat was difficult. I was in Chicago during an unbelievable heat wave. Everyday the temperature rose above 100°F (37°C), and the train platforms got really hot. I had to make sure that everyone didn't look like they were passing out when I photographed them.

I was looking for a good position to make a skyline shot, and I found a security guard in a really nice loft building. He gave me the security code to the whole building so I could come and go as I pleased. Coming from New York City, I was completely blown away that someone would just give me the code to the whole building. I went in two or three times. I still know the code, in case I want to throw some rooftop parties when I go back.
