Brothers In Arms
Photograph by O. Louis Mazzatenta

A star-spangled shirt reflected the patriotic spirit as World War II veterans gathered for the dedication of the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Virginia. Sitting in stifling heat, a crowd of 21,000 heard President George W. Bush honor the men who fought to liberate Europe on the 57th anniversary of the Allied invasion of Normandy. Bedford was selected for the site because it’s believed to have suffered the most D-Day deaths per capita of any community in the United States—19 out of a population of less than 4,000.
