One-Man Army Photograph by Peter Essick
A single man operating a mammoth multifunctional harvester can now cut tree stands that once required a brigade of chain-saw-wielding lumberjacks. More powerful tools dont necessarily mean more thoughtless cutting though. The international Forestry Stewardship Council establishes standards for certifying the sustainability of timber harvests like this one near Lyksele, Sweden. A growing number of forestry operations have committed to protecting highly sensitive habitat and to reserving a portion of their productive lands from exploitation. |
