Secret Weapon of the Confederacy Zoom In 5

Lost and Found
Photograph by Ira Block

A well-preserved leather wallet found on a crewman’s skeleton may help establish the identity of its ill-fated owner. Archaeologists uncovered many personal effects, from tobacco pipes and pocketknives to a storied $20 gold piece carried by the sub’s skipper. All offer poignant reminders of eight men who, though long dead, once lived.
