Gangplank Pooches

Real estate broker Hugh Kelly—who lives year-round at the Gangplank Marina aboard his 53-foot (16-meter)yacht, the Person Friday II—takes 13-year-old poodles Winnie and Maggie to his Capitol Hill office each day. The live-aboard lapdog sisters, both blind, stick close to Kelly yet prance confidently along the dock to and from his slip. “I get a huge payback living on the water,” says Kelly. “I come home from work and the gate clanks behind me, and I’m in a different world.” He admits, however, that life on a yacht requires a degree of minimalism. “Most people like their stuff,” he says, “but you can’t have stuff on a boat. You buy a pair of shoes, you get rid of a pair.” |
