Bloom in hand, a young girl gazes pensively as her companion carries bread for the observance of Corpus Christi in Salvador. Portuguese conquerors and the settlers who followed them brought Catholicism to Brazil. They imposed the religion first on the native population and later on slaves brought from Africa to toil on New World plantations.
