Heels Over Head
Photograph by David Alan Harvey

Sand provides a cushion for a young man flipped by his friend as they practice the fluid motions of a martial art and dance called capoeira that slaves brought with them from central Africa. In Bahia youths practice such moves—perfected in capoeira schools—on the streets and beaches.
