Water is as scarce as sand is plentiful during the dry season in Ethiopia, where young Hamar women must dig deep into a parched riverbed for meager cupfuls of fresh water. By 2025 a third of the worlds projected population of about eight billion could face severe water shortages. The semiarid areas of sub-Saharan Africa and Asia are expected to suffer the most. |
