That Sinking Feeling Photograph by Jay Dickman
Because of low water, sailors need a ladder to climb four feet (1.2 meters) from the Shardonnay onto this dock in Lake Michigan. A few years ago owner Bill Maul of Suttons Bay simply stepped across. But by the fall of 2000, the yacht basin at Suttons Bay was getting tight. The Shardonnay draws four and a half feet (.15 meters) of water, says Maul, and it was nearly touching bottom at times. |
