Meerkats Zoom In 1

Run for Cover
Photograph by Mattias Klum

Meerkats hightail it to the closest bolt-holes and burrows when a member of the group voices an alarm. Barks, trills, growls, and peeps vary by threat. One sound signals the approach of a martial eagle, another warns that a cobra slithers nearby. The louder the call, the closer the danger—and the faster the meerkats react.
