Bearing Witness
Photograph by Ira Block

Senior court clerk Joseph Darcy, left, leads the Pledge of Allegiance daily in New York’s Criminal Courts Building at 100 Centre Street in Chinatown. A moment of silence and patriotic songs sung by senior court officer Ralph Bova, center, follow. Bova and about 25 other court officers saw the planes hit the twin towers from the building’s 14th floor, then rushed to help. Three of them—William “Harry” Thompson, Thomas Jurgens, and Mitchel Wallace—never returned.
