Tokyo Zoom In 5

Playing Make-believe
Photograph by Michael Yamashita

It’s not exactly Malibu, but for the densely packed Tokyo Bay area it’s at least an inkling of a sun-drenched seaside paradise. Wild Blue Yokohama offers an ersatz seashore experience where bathers spread their blankets on “simulated sand” (read rubberized floor). Wild Blue boasts that its machine-generated waves can hit every six seconds. But the tide will soon ebb forever: The complex will be demolished to make way for new construction.
