A Place of Refuge for All Photograph from AFP/CORBIS
Built in the fourth century to mark the birthplace of Jesus Christ, the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem broadcasts Christmas mass each year to some 50 countries around the world. In the congregation on Christmas Eve 2000 (above) was Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, making his first visit to the West Bank since the start of the al-Aqsa intifada in September 2000. The Church of the Nativity, says Michel Sabbah, Catholic bishop for Bethlehem, is “a place of refuge for all.” |
